What it is
Guided 4×4 drives through national parks, usually entering at dawn and returning mid-morning, with a second drive late in the day. Sri Lanka has the highest leopard density recorded anywhere plus elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and an enormous bird list.

What to expect
Long periods of scanning scrub with no sightings, then sudden activity. Dawn light, dust, engine noise and heat. Nothing is staged and no sighting is guaranteed.
Practical information
- Book the vehicle the day before through your lodge.
- Take binoculars, a light jacket and motion-sickness tablets if you are sensitive.
- Choose operators employing local guides and staying on marked tracks.
Responsible tourism
Never ask a driver to chase or crowd an animal. Keep distance, cut the engine near kills, and refuse any operator advertising guaranteed sightings or captive photo opportunities.
