Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka
Short answerFor the south and west coasts and the hill country, December to April is the most reliable window. For the east coast and Arugam Bay, April to September. July and August are the only months that work well in both — which is why they are busy.
Quick answer
Sri Lanka has two monsoons affecting opposite coasts at opposite times, so there is no single best month for the whole island.
Why one 'best month' is wrong
The south-west monsoon (roughly May to September) wets the south and west coasts while the east stays dry. The north-east monsoon (roughly October to January) reverses it. Between them sit inter-monsoon periods with short, heavy afternoon showers almost anywhere.

Month by month, in short
January to March is the safest combination of dry weather across the south, hills and Cultural Triangle. April is hot on the plains but still dry. May to September shifts the guarantee east: Arugam Bay and the cultural sites in the north work well while the south coast has showers and rougher sea. October and November are the wettest months almost everywhere and the least good for a first visit.
Around the Sinhala and Tamil New Year
Around 13–15 April the country stops. Trains sell out, many businesses close for two or three days and internal roads get busy. It is a fascinating time to be here if you plan ahead, and a frustrating one if you do not.
What to do if your dates are fixed
Sri Lanka is not a country you should cancel over rain. If you must travel in the wet window, base yourself on the east coast, keep the hill-country days short and treat rain as an afternoon event rather than a lost day.
