What it is
Warm water, long rights and mellow beach breaks on both coasts. The south coast runs roughly November to April and the east coast April to September, so surfers can follow the dry season around the island.
Where
South: Weligama for learners, Midigama and Hiriketiya for more push. East: Arugam Bay for the main point, plus Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm.
When
South coast: November to April. East coast: April to September. Swells are small to mid-sized and boards are hireable everywhere.
What to expect
Crowds at the well-known peaks in high season, reef or rock underfoot at several breaks, and long flat spells between swells.
Practical information
- Beginners should start at Weligama where the bottom is sand.
- Reef shoes help at the rocky points.
- Reef-safe sunscreen — the reefs here are shallow and stressed.
Responsible tourism
Right of way goes to the surfer already on the wave. Do not drop in, and give the local line-up room.
