Mirissa

The village grew around a fishing harbour and a single crescent of sand backed by coconut palms. Boat trips leave early from the small harbour; in season they reach blue whales and sperm whales within a couple of hours of the coast. The beach itself suits families because the bay is sheltered.

• Blue-whale watching runs roughly December to April on this coast, weather permitting.
• It is a relaxed base for the south coast: Weligama's surf schools, Dikwella and the Mulkirigala rock temples are within reach.
• Sunset from Coconut Tree Hill is a short walk from the beach.

Boats depart around 06:30–07:00; choose operators following the local approach guidelines and never crowd the animals.

Swim in the bay

The sheltered side is swimmable most of the season; there can be a strong current at the far end.

Ten minutes by tuk-tuk; long, forgiving beach breaks for learners.

Walk to Coconut Tree Hill

Go at sunrise for the light and to avoid the midday heat.

About 2.5–3 hours by road from Colombo via the expressway to Matara, then north. Coastal trains from Colombo Fort to Mirissa station take around 4–5 hours.
