What it is
Working Ceylon tea estates that open their factory floors to visitors: plucking, withering, rolling, oxidising, drying and grading, usually finishing with a tasting of the day's grades.

What to expect
Noise, heat and the smell of withering leaf, followed by a tasting table. Some estates still pluck by hand with women carrying baskets on their backs.
Practical information
- Ask which parts of the factory are operating on the day — processing follows the harvest.
- Buy direct from the estate where you can; it keeps more value local.
- Dress warmly — the factories are at 1,200–1,800 m.

Ask before photographing workers. Choose estates that publish their wages or hold a recognised certification rather than those selling a photo opportunity.
