Ella

Ella sits in a gap in the central highlands where the land falls away towards the south coast. Tea estates and cloud forest run down both flanks, the town itself is a single busy strip of guesthouses and cafés, and most of what visitors come for is within a 45-minute walk or a short tuk-tuk ride. It is busy in the December–January high season and refreshingly quiet in the shoulder months.

Walk to Little Adam's Peak

A 40–60 minute return walk on a clear path; go before 07:30 to beat cloud and crowds.

Climb Ella Rock

Allow 2–3 hours return with a steep final section. Start at dawn and take water.

Walk down through the jungle from Ella town (about 30 minutes) and time it with a passing train.

Ride the last section of the Kandy–Ella line

If arriving by rail, sit on the right-hand side heading down from Nanu Oya for the best valley views.

February to April brings the driest spell in the hills. July to September is also usually workable. Expect afternoons to be cloudy most of the year, and note that the hill country stays wetter than the coasts from October to January.

Three nights is comfortable. Two nights works if you arrive by train and leave the following afternoon; one night is not enough.

The hill-country rail line from Kandy to Ella takes roughly 6–7 hours end to end and is the recommended approach — book reserved seats well ahead. By road it is about 5–6 hours from Kandy depending on traffic. Buses run from Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Bandaragama, with changes.

The town centre is walkable. Tuk-tuk drivers quote by trip rather than by meter; agree the fare before you set off. For Ella Rock, the Nine Arch Bridge and Ravana Falls you will want a driver for half a day.
