Choosing a park
Each park has a speciality and a crowd level. Yala is the famous one and behaves like it in high season. Udawalawe is more reliable for elephants and easier to reach from the south. Minneriya's gathering of elephants on the receding tank bed is a genuine natural event, usually strongest in the drier middle of the year.

Seasons and closures
Park access and closures vary by zone and year, and some areas shut for maintenance or breeding seasons. Confirm current openings with the Department of Wildlife Conservation before you book accommodation around a specific park.
What a drive is really like
Two or three hours of scanning scrub, then a few minutes of intensity. Sightings depend on water, prey and luck. Operators who promise sightings are telling you what you want to hear.
Ethics in practice
Stay in the vehicle, keep distance, never crowd an animal against water, and avoid any attraction offering selfies with captive wildlife. Choose guides who employ locally and follow warden instructions without argument.
