Beaches in Sri Lanka
Short answerFor calm swimming and families on the south coast, pick Unawatuna, Mirissa or Bentota between December and April. For surf and emptier sand, go east to Arugam Bay or Trincomalee between April and September. Outside those windows the sea on that side is usually rough.

South and south-west coast
sheltered bays, beach bars, easy tuk-tuk hopping from Galle to Matara. December to April is the settled window; from May the south-west monsoon brings bigger surf and rain, though mornings often stay clear.

East coast
Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Arugam Bay dry out from April to September while the south is wet. This is the answer for anyone travelling during the northern summer holidays.
Reading the sea
Flags and local advice beat habit. Rip currents exist on the exposed beaches, and several popular bays have rocky or urchin-covered entries — reef shoes and a look before you wade.
Beyond sunbathing
Turtle hatcheries at Kosgoda, mangrove boat trips at Madu River, whale trips from Mirissa and surfing at Weligama are all within reach of the same base — which is why the south coast works so well for families.
