What it is
A slow, ordinary, scenic railway built in the colonial era to move tea from the hills to Colombo — now the most famous journey in the country. Second class with reserved seats is the practical choice: windows open, no air-conditioning, and a lot of people watching.

The high line runs Kandy – Nanu Oya – Ella – Badulla. The coastal line from Colombo to Galle is the other scenic option.
When
Year-round, but mornings are clearer in the hills. Reserve ahead in December, January and around the New Year.
What to expect
Delays, crowded platforms, vendors moving through the carriages, and long stretches where the track runs directly along the edge of the tea slopes. Do not hang out of the doors — it is the single most common cause of injury on this line.
Practical information
- Reserve seats when bookings open; unreserved carriages fill up fast.
- Keep a hand on your bag at platform stops.
- Take water and something to eat; the journey is longer than it looks on a map.
Responsible tourism
Do not ride on the doorsteps or lean out for photographs, and do not give money to children who approach the train — it reinforces a harmful pattern.
