Overview
Set around a small lake at 500 m, Kandy is a working city of some 120,000 people rather than a preserved museum piece. Buses crowd the ring road, the market at Daldali deals in spice and produce, and every evening an offering takes place at the Temple of the Tooth. It is the natural overnight stop between the Cultural Triangle and the highlands.

How to get there
Trains run from Colombo Fort to Kandy in about 3.5–4 hours on the main line. By road it is roughly 3.5 hours from Colombo, 2 hours from Dambulla or Sigiriya.
Getting around
The centre is compact and walkable. City buses and tuk-tuks cover everything else; agree fares in advance.
Practical information
- The temple is a place of worship — photography rules inside the inner chamber change, follow signage.
- Kandy's ring road jams between 16:00 and 19:00; allow extra time for airport transfers.
- Altitude is moderate (500 m) but evenings are cooler than Colombo.
