What it is
Early-morning boat trips from Mirissa harbour heading into deep water off the continental shelf. Blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins are seen in season, with the peak of blue-whale sightings usually around January to March.

What to expect
Two hours of open sea before the first sighting, swell, and possibly nothing at all. When whales are found the boats idle at distance while the animals surface and feed.
Practical information
- Take something for seasickness before you board, not after.
- Wear a hat and long sleeves — the return leg is hot.
- Book with operators following the local viewing guidelines; boats should not chase animals.
Responsible tourism
Do not support operators that pursue, circle or crowd whales. Sound the engines are cut near animals and keep a respectful distance at all times.
