Galle

The fort was rebuilt by the Dutch in the 17th century on a natural headland and later occupied by the British; today it is a UNESCO site with hotels, cafés and galleries inside the walls. Outside, Greater Galle is an ordinary working city, and the beaches of Unawatuna, Thalpe and Dalawella lie a short ride south.

• The rampart walk at sunset is one of the simplest pleasures on the island.
• It works as a relaxed finish to a route, with an international airport connection at Colombo 2 hours away.
• Beaches, turtle hatcheries at Kosgoda and the Koggala lake area are all within reach.

December to April is the reliable dry season on this coast. The south-west monsoon typically runs May to September, bringing surf and showers, though mornings are often clear.

Two or three nights. One night turns Galle into a photo stop rather than a place you actually experience.

About 2 hours by road from Colombo via the expressway; buses run frequently from Colombo's Bastian Mawatha stand. There is also a coastal rail line from Colombo Fort to Galle in roughly 2–2.5 hours.

The fort is entirely walkable. Tuk-tuks reach the surrounding beaches in 10–20 minutes.
